Meeniyan

Meeniyan means 'moon behind the trees over the water' in the language of the local Aboriginal people and this magical scene is depicted as the town's logo.  Meeniyan was transformed by the arrival of the railway, which enabled daily shipments of the area's dairy produce to the once distant market of Melbourne.

Today, Meeniyan is a buzzing country town bursting with community pride and family-friendly spaces.  Take your time exploring the main street with its range of unique shops, homely cafes and restaurants, and wander through the gallery; boasting the talents of artists near and far.  The town also hosts a midweek market on the third Thursday of each month.  Renowned for its acoustics, the historical Meeniyan Hall hosts a number of live acts throughout the year and is the town's centrepiece.  The current building was opened in July 1939.  It replaced the original hall, built in 1892, which burnt down in 1938.
